Team of Teams: A Foundational Course
Your Journey to a Team of Teams Starts Here.
Traditional leadership models are insufficient for the challenges of today's rapidly evolving and unpredictable environment.
Organizations can be completely overcome by crisis in an instant. Entire markets evaporated by rapidly emerging technological advances. A cascading increase of devastating natural disasters pummel both the public and private sector. What if there was a way to not only survive in this environment, but to thrive?
Enter the Team of Teams Leadership Framework, a transformative, yet actionable, system to ensure agility, adaptability, and speed. In this foundational course, participants will dive into the essential elements of building a robust, interconnected, and empowered organization.
01. The Challenge
The U.S. military’s most elite troops call the Joint Special Operations Command home. However, these highly efficient and well-organized operators faced a new and unconventional enemy as they confronted Al Qaeda in Iraq. AQI had no structure, no predictability, and seemingly, no weaknesses as U.S. forces grappled with how to overcome a challenge that presented itself like none the force had faced before.
02. Adapting to the Environment
The sheer pace of information flow and decisions that must be made in this new and complex environment force organizations to adapt or be left behind. No matter what efficiencies a company can find it will never keep pace with the ever-evolving networks both inside and outside the rank and file that show up on the org chart. The case is clear – a Team of Teams is required to break down walls that inhibit collaboration and slow organizations.
03. Restructuring a Team of Teams
Born in the crucible of combat, the Team of Teams framework was developed to overcome inertia and facilitate information sharing to drive action. While traditional leadership models look for efficiencies in operations, Team of Teams prioritizes collaboration over control, communication over coordination, common purpose over blind loyalty, and effectiveness over efficiency.
04. Defining the Capabilities
A Team of Teams has four capabilities: Common Purpose, Trust, Shared Consciousness, and Empowered Execution. None of these capabilities can stand alone in a successful team. Each capability is interdependent and can allow even large organizations to move with the speed of a startup.
05. Leading Like a Gardener
Many leaders think of themselves as chess masters, moving pieces at their discretion on a one-dimensional playing field; however, this is an unrealistic perspective in today’s complex and dynamic environment where variables are countless and multi-dimensional. It’s impossible for a leader to know all the different moves available to them at any given time. Today’s leaders need the skills of a gardener who cares for their plants and sets the conditions for growth.
06. Our Shifting Environment
Today’s environment has only gotten more complex and less predictable. Leaders of the past worked in mostly linear scenarios where A + B = C. In our new world, the threats are everywhere and variables too numerous to count; however, organizations can not only survive in this new environment, but they can also thrive.
